If you plan to enter Canada temporarily for purposes such as vacation or visiting family and friends, you may need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), unless you are from a “visa-exempt” country. A TRV is a document issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office outside of Canada, confirming that the holder meets the requirements to enter Canada as a visitor. TRVs can be issued for single or multiple entries, and most visitors are allowed to stay for up to six months. Temporary foreign workers (TFWs) and international students may be granted admission for varying lengths of time, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Who do not require a TRV (Tourist Visa)?

Foreign nationals who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents and do not need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) are classified as citizens of visa-exempt countries. Canada has agreements with several nations allowing their citizens to enter visa-free for up to six months. However, those flying to Canada must obtain a valid electronic travel authorization (eTA) before their journey.

Exemptions where an eTA is not required

-Travelers entering Canada by land or sea

– Permanent residents (required to carry their permanent resident card)

– U.S. citizens

– Individuals holding a valid Canadian visa

– Passengers on flights making unscheduled stops in Canada due to emergencies or unexpected      situations

After applying, the Visa Officer may require you to provide biometric data at an authorized Visa Application Center (VAC).

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) evaluates applications based on several factors. While each case is unique, the following key considerations typically apply:
