Student Direct Stream
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a program by the Government of Canada that provides faster processing of study permits for international students from specific countries. The SDS aims to streamline and expedite the application process, typically within 20 calendar days, for students who meet specific criteria. The SDS is available to students from certain countries, including China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, Senegal, and Morocco, among others.
SDS Program Requirements
- 1. Letter of Acceptance: An acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
- 2. Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC): Proof of a GIC of CAD 10,000 to cover living expenses in Canada.
- 3. Tuition Payment: Evidence of full payment for the first year of tuition at the Canadian institution.
- 4. Language Proficiency:

- English: IELTS score of at least 6.0 in each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).
- French: TEF score equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 or higher in each skill.

- 5. Medical Exam: If required, proof of a medical exam depending on the applicant’s country of residence.
- 6. Police Certificate: If required by the applicant’s country of residence, proof of a police clearance certificate.
What is Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
Proof of your GIC purchase can be provided through any of the following
- A letter of attestation
- A GIC certificate
- An Investment Directions Confirmation or
- An Investment Balance Confirmation
Hold the GIC in an investment or student account that remains inaccessible until you arrive in Canada.
Upon your arrival in Canada, you’ll receive an initial portion of your GIC, with the remaining balance disbursed to you in installments over the following 10 to 12 months.

Major Banks: Most large banks offer GICs, such as:
- Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)
- Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD)
- Bank of Montreal (BMO)
- Scotiabank
- Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
Online Banks: Some online banks also provide GICs, often with competitive interest rates, including:
- Tangerine Bank
- EQ Bank
Credit Unions: Many credit unions across Canada offer GICs with various terms and rates.
Specialized Providers: Some financial services companies may offer GICs, particularly for students or newcomers to Canada.
