Student Direct Stream

Student Direct Stream

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a program by the Government of Canada that provides faster processing of study permits for international students from specific countries. The SDS aims to streamline and expedite the application process, typically within 20 calendar days, for students who meet specific criteria. The SDS is available to students from certain countries, including China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, Senegal, and Morocco, among others.

SDS Program Requirements

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) program has specific requirements for international students to qualify for faster study permit processing. Here are the key requirements for SDS:
  • 1. Letter of Acceptance: An acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
  • 2. Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC): Proof of a GIC of CAD 10,000 to cover living expenses in Canada.
  • 3. Tuition Payment: Evidence of full payment for the first year of tuition at the Canadian institution.
  • 4. Language Proficiency:
      •     English: IELTS score of at least 6.0 in each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).
    •     French: TEF score equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 or higher in each skill.
  • 5. Medical Exam: If required, proof of a medical exam depending on the applicant’s country of residence.
  • 6. Police Certificate: If required by the applicant’s country of residence, proof of a police clearance certificate.
Meeting these requirements allows for a faster processing time, typically around 20 calendar days, under the SDS.

What is Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a low-risk Canadian investment where you deposit money with a bank for a fixed term and receive a guaranteed return. It protects your initial amount, offering stable but modest interest, making it ideal for conservative investors.

Proof of your GIC purchase can be provided through any of the following

  • A letter of attestation
  • A GIC certificate
  • An Investment Directions Confirmation or
  • An Investment Balance Confirmation

Hold the GIC in an investment or student account that remains inaccessible until you arrive in Canada.

Upon your arrival in Canada, you’ll receive an initial portion of your GIC, with the remaining balance disbursed to you in installments over the following 10 to 12 months.

Where to get GIC?

You can obtain a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from various financial institutions in Canada, including:
  • Major Banks: Most large banks offer GICs, such as:

    • Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)
    • Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD)
    • Bank of Montreal (BMO)
    • Scotiabank
    • Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
  • Online Banks: Some online banks also provide GICs, often with competitive interest rates, including:

    • Tangerine Bank
    • EQ Bank
  • Credit Unions: Many credit unions across Canada offer GICs with various terms and rates.

  • Specialized Providers: Some financial services companies may offer GICs, particularly for students or newcomers to Canada.

You can purchase GICs through the institutions’ websites, in-person at a branch, or over the phone. Make sure to compare interest rates and terms before making a decision.

Advantages of applying through SDS

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) offers several advantages, including faster study permit processing (typically within 20 days), a simplified application process, and a higher approval rate. Applicants must demonstrate financial stability through a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), which proves they can cover living and study expenses in Canada. The program is available to students from select countries, ensuring targeted support. Additionally, SDS applicants remain eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), allowing them to gain work experience in Canada after graduation.
